Nine years after being released and traveling about nine billion miles through the solar system, the probe New Horizons, NASA agreed a period of hibernation on Monday (8), preparing to approach the Current “dwarf planet” Pluto.
New Horizons hibernated 18 times since it took off in January 2006. During his trip, the probe spent two thirds of his time in hibernating space to save energy and reduce the risk of system failures.
NASA will spend the next few weeks checking the status of the spacecraft, ensuring that instruments such as the highly Telescope resolution and space dust collector, are working properly.
Before arriving in Pluto, the main mission of New Horizons will exceed the limits of the Kuiper Belt and examine the mini ice planets that are in that region, three billion kilometers distant Neptune.
The probe must still travel over 260 million miles to reach the dwarf planet, what should happen on July 14, 2015.
