MediaTek admits bug that lets Android 4.4 KitKat smartphones with his vulnerable chipset – Adrenaline

The MediaTek confirmed officially that there is a bug affecting part of the devices running Android 4.4 KitKat using their chipsets. The flaw was first encountered by security researcher Justin Case which states that an attacker could use the bug to have root access to the smartphone, which exposes the device to almost any type of malicious use possible.

Despite admitting that the bug actually exists, MediaTek said that the responsibility actually was of handset manufacturers, because the problem would be in a de-bug feature of chipsets targeted for developers who should be off before distributing the devices.

We have knowledge of this problem and it was reviewed by the security team of MediaTek. It was mostly found on devices running Android 4.4 KitKat, due to a de-bug feature designed to inter test -operabilidade in telecommunications in China. After testing, smartphone manufacturers should disable this feature before sending smartphones.

The company did not elaborate on in which the problem affects devices, but says he has warned manufacturers about the bug.
