A rare solar eclipse can be followed in some states in the North and Northeast of Brazil and parts of Africa, Europe and the United States on Sunday, when the moon had covered the sun partially or totally, depending on the observer’s location. This should be the last solar eclipse of 2013, and can be seen in the country in the morning, between 9am and 11am (GMT).

The rounded shape of the earth, leaving some regions of the planet closest to the moon, explains why some viewers of western Africa will see a total eclipse, while those who are in Brazil, in the eastern United States or in southern Europe will only see the sun partially hidden. In any case, experts recommend not to look directly at the Sun during this unusual hybrid eclipse, unless you use a special glass or observe the phenomenon indirectly, using a filter. Sunglasses protect the eyes not common enough, warned.

Most of the eclipse will take place at 10h37 Brasília in the Atlantic Ocean, 330 km southwest of Liberia, according to a NASA site on the internet that records eclipses. In Brazil, the annular eclipse can only be seen in its partial form – ie the size of the moon in the sky will not be enough to completely cover the Sun

In Gabon, West Africa, the total eclipse can be seen. At the peak of the phenomenon on Earth, in the central African country, around 11:50 Brasilia, the sun will be hidden for a minute or so. The solar eclipse will last for ten seconds in northern Kenya.

If weather conditions permit, the partial phases of the eclipse can be observed in southern Europe, including some parts of Spain, Italy and Greece. In the eastern United States, viewers will see a partial eclipse shortly after sunrise, as well as in Brazil, where the sunlight must escape around the moon
