It is a new era for one of the web pioneers. The operator Verizon telecommunications confirmed the purchase of the main operations of Yahoo, a portal that marked the 1990s and for years been looking for a course for reverse the decline of financial performance.

the deal, which was already anticipated long, was closed for 4.8 billion (EUR 4.4 billion) and put in hands Verizon central products of Yahoo, including the portal, the various content sites, email and search engine. Payment will be made entirely in cash

This change of hands of the main activities means that Yahoo will become essentially a holding capital company in two other companies:. Has a 16% stake in Alibaba China, one online sales giant, and owns almost 36% of Yahoo Japan, which operates as an independent company.

With this purchase, Verizon continues the strategy of having multiple content brands. The deal comes after the operator has bought AOL, another of the great companies of the early Web days and owner of popular sites like Techcrunch and Huffington Post. “Just over a year we bought AOL to increase our strategy to link the various screens consumers, creators and advertisers. The acquisition of Yahoo will put Verizon in a highly competitive position, “said the president of Verizon, Lowell McAdam in a statement. For its part, the CEO of AOL said that “Yahoo has long been an investor in quality content and created some of the brands most appreciated by consumers in categories such as sports, news and finance.”

Yahoo was born in 1994 and became a giant in the first phase of the web, with a success based on selling advertising. He struggled to adapt to technological developments and was eventually overtaken by companies like Google and later Facebook. It is rarely used in Europe where Google products dominate the market, but still have expression in some countries and is a well-known US brand.

Four years ago, Yahoo hired Google to current chief executive, Marissa Mayer, which was then widely portrayed in the press as a brilliant manager girl, who could give back to the company. However, Mayer eventually it becomes known for a number of bad beats. One of his first signings was the Portuguese Henrique de Castro, a former colleague from Google, for the important position of director of operations ( Chief Operating Officer ). The executive would eventually be fired less than year and a half later with a multi-million dollar compensation. Mayer was also responsible for the purchase of Tumblr, a platform of blogs which did not achieve the anticipated results.

“Yahoo and AOL popularized the Internet, email, search and content in time real “recalled Mayer. “It’s poetic to be joining forces with AOL and Verizon as we enter our next chapter concentrates on achieving scale in [sector] mobile.”
