Tim Sweeney says that the updates for Windows 10 will hurt Steam – IGN Portugal

Tim Sweeney has a slightly dark vision about Microsoft and its intentions with system updates to its latest operating system, Windows 10.

According to him, Microsoft will seek to “make progressively worse Steam” through successive updates, to force producers to opt for UWP, culminating in the open system closure that are PC’s.

This is not the first time that Sweeney criticizes the Microsoft platform, which accuses him of being an instrument to monopolize the open development platform for PC. For him, Microsoft will slowly upgrade your OS in order to destroy the third-party and applications stores like Steam and eventually even to eliminate Win32 applications.

“There are two programming interfaces for Windows, and each application must choose one of them each application of Steam. – every game of the last decade -. has used Win32 Universal Windows Platform is an antidote to that is much more closed.

“the risk here is that Microsoft convince everyone to use the UWP later by offsetting the Win32 applications. If you can do this successfully, it will be a small jump in the direction of forcing all applications and games to be distributed through the Windows Store. Once reached this point, the PC becomes a closed platform. Not one day fasten a button and ruin your library of Steam – what they are trying to do is a series of dubious maneuvers. The idea is becoming increasingly inconvenient to use old apps at the same time trying to be the exclusive source of new applications. “

This may even be the reason why Valve is a strong investment in the development of a gaming ecosystem for Linux, encouraging the use of API’s like Vulkan, to the detriment of DirectX 12 from Microsoft.

“Slowly, over the next five years, will deploy Windows updates that will make Steam worse. Never will ‘from’ completely, but will do so until people get their fill of Steam problems and look at the Windows Store with new eyes. It is not the first time we do something like that, and now they are doing it to Steam. They may not have the power to implement this plan successfully, but certainly going to try. “

At this time, the Windows Store is unlikely to be an option for any gaming enthusiast PC. Several performance problems and compatibilities, and the platform does not offer users the control to which it is accustomed and always required.

So, it seems difficult to Microsoft convince anyone to opt for the Windows Store, abdicating stable platforms and merits tested with Steam. But in the world of technology, things change (too) quickly.
