In the middle of next year, the downtown Porto will have four thousand square meters of requalified spaces to install newly created that need to gain scale undertakings. This will be one of the first visible consequences of scaleup Port strategy, which was presented Wednesday by the founding partners. The city joined the University – through Upetc, Science and Technology Park and Porto Business School – the Polytechnic and the National Innovation Agency, a consortium that aims to create an environment, and provide tools to help the hundreds of startup generated within these and other institutions to medrarem the international market.

There are many examples in Porto, companies created in the city which have climbed several levels, to become (re) known internationally. The veniam, which develops vehicle network data transmission in an urban environment, is just one of the recent cases of a list that includes Kinematix, Blip, the Uniplaces the AdClick, Nonius Software, the Mog Technologies, Gem or Movvo, among others.

But their success hides the difficulties that they themselves felt to get where they are, and engulhos that prevent others to tread a similar path, and that often start with the lack of skills in areas such as management (something that can help an entrepreneur to become an entrepreneur, as noted, insistently, in the presentation of scaleup Puerto strategy).

Another problem that any Startup face is obviously the funding of the new business. Although the situation has improved, the country does not seem to afford, or attention, enough. And the consortium scaleup Port wants to help attract the interest of many international sources of investment. So already in May next year organizes scaleup For Europe conference.

At the same time it serves as a launch for a European initiative to promote the maturation of innovative business projects, ranging from this first moment cities like Manchester, Eindhoven and Helsinki and a national-level body in the United Kingdom, the scaleup Institute, the initiative, three days, will take the port potential lenders.

The scaleup for Europe coincide with the annual conference the European Businness Angels Network (EBAN), which also performs in Porto. And the councilor with responsibility for Innovation, Filipe Araújo, said that the city will use this stage to itself is setting up (and scaleup Porto is also this, a showcase), to show investors from various countries the entrepreneurial potential, and business brewing and maturation in Porto.

The numbers that have been released are statements. Only UPTEC has helped 164 business projects born and supported the graduation of 32 companies that, in total, it is estimated, have created 1800 skilled jobs and had an impact of 70 million euros in gross domestic product.

In the new spaces to create the Low no room for 300 jobs. And they are welcome because the UPTEC already have some difficulty, despite the large investment in facilities to accommodate all who apply for a small space to kick-start a new project. With the departure of companies able to “climb”, others may take their place in the various poles of the park around the port. City that witnessed the birth, however, the association Founders to Founders, which brings together companies born in this ecosystem and who have gone to another level, and has other structures, public and private, friends who want to start a new business.

The Port scaleup strategy is one of the political stakes of the council, who had been working on the project for about a year and a half. From it, the camera led by Rui Moreira intends to internationally position the city as an open space for creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, attracting this way not only potential future entrepreneurs, as well as established companies and, of course, potential funders. The audience of the meeting this afternoon, also pointed up the need to attract talent, proposing including making an roadshow by foreign universities.
