Error expose information of millions of US voters

An independent security researcher in computing said on Monday (28) that a database with information of 191 million American voters was exposed on the Internet because of a configuration error.

The database includes names, addresses, dates of birth, affiliation to parties, phone numbers and e -mails voters in all 50 US states and Washington, said researcher Chris Vickery in a telephone interview.

Vickery, an Austin Technology Support Specialist, Texas, he said he found information exposed while looking for information on the Internet in an attempt to raise awareness about data leaks.

“I want our society respects more privacy,” he said. “We need a serious referendum on how private data is handled.”

Vickery said he could not say if others had access to the database of voters, which took about a day to be downloaded. The researcher could not identify who controls the database.

He said it is working with US federal authorities to find out the owner and be able to remove the public outreach data. The researcher would not identify the agencies.

A representative of the FBI declined to comment.
