Arrival is scheduled for the next morning at 4:25, Lisbon time
The American astronaut Scott Kelly returns from space next morning, after nearly a year in orbit – more precisely, 340 days. The arrival on Earth is scheduled for 4:25 tomorrow (Lisbon time). With his return, starts the second phase of this journey, in which NASA will study the effects of nearly one in orbit year in Scott, but having as compared to his twin, Mark Kelly, who is also an astronaut and was on the ground then everything from below.
the study of two brothers with radically different experiences over the past 340 days will provide the space agency of the United States valuable information for the preparation of future missions to Mars, which will be necessarily extended. It is, at least, that NASA hopes.
Throughout this mission on the ISS, the International Space Station, Scott was subject to the harsh conditions of microgravity in orbit, which causes severe loss of muscle and bone mass interferes with the metabolism and subject astronauts to greater cosmic radiation levels. All these effects were monitored regularly during these 340 days, while the twin who stayed on Earth was also regularly observed by doctors.
Experience, which NASA called Twins Study (study of twins) will also pass DNA by thorough comparison of each of the twins having identical genome. What differences will now, after a year in environments so radically different?
The first day of the rest of life of Kelly twins begins tomorrow.
