The day is marked by the so called winter solstice, when the sun’s rays strike the northern hemisphere with greater slope. To the common view, corresponds to the day when the sun makes its closest horizon path.

According to the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory, the sun emerged in Lisbon at 7:51 a.m. and will disappear at 17h19. The exact moment of the solstice occurs at 17h11. The day marks the beginning of winter and has its opposite on 21 June, when the summer solstice

Coincident with the chronological onset of winter, here comes the cold and rain. The Portuguese Institute of Marine and Atmospheric provides for the passage of weather fronts through day 26, with heavy rain the day before and the day of Christmas, particularly in the North and Centre. From Monday, July 23, may snowing in the Sierra da Estrela. The cold will feel more intensely on the 25th.

The good news is that, from now on, the days around here start to get longer.
