Winter Solstice occurs this Saturday - The Ball

This Saturday, the day will have less than nine and a half hours of sunshine. The winter solstice, a time which over the years became associated with Christmas, takes place today at 17:11 hours.

On Earth, this phenomenon (winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere) when the sun comes reaches the lower zone on the horizon.

That is the smallest day of the year, the sun rises a little before 8 am and begins at 17:19 hours-Lisbon.

In the history abound references to the importance of the winter solstice. In 2012, Guatemalan Mayan priests held a ceremony to mark the date, considered by the Mayans as the beginning of a new era (December 21, 2012).
