The use of immunotherapy to fight cancer was the most significant scientific advance in 2013, reveals the annual “ranking” of the journal Science about ten, today released key findings.

Several clinical trials of immunotherapy – a treatment which acts on the immune system, including T lymphocytes to attack tumors – proved to be very promising, especially against aggressive cancers, such as melanoma, according to those of the last this year’s edition of the magazine, which comes out today for the stalls.

A large number of advances in cancer immunotherapy dates back to the discovery, in the late ’80s by French investigators, a receptor on T cells, which prevents them from attacking cancerous tumors with all his strength.
