São Paulo – The name of the first Xbox , released in 2002, was chosen from over 30 possibilities – among them, X-11, WEP and CyberPlayGround.

The list was unveiled by the executive Seamus Blackley, one of those responsible for creating the Xbox. He worked at Microsoft from 1998 to 2002.

In an interview with Edge, Blackley exposed and commented on the long list with all the names that competed with “Xbox” to title the onslaught of MS in the field of consoles.

“First we had our codenames, which were: WEP (Windows Entertainment Project), which was thought to leave Microsoft executives quiet; Midway (midway between the PC and console), and DirectX Box, which was gradually reduced to Xbox, “said Blackley.

He continued: “When we approved the project to create a console, Kevin Bachus (member of the development team of the first Xbox) said we had to get a new name, because Xbox had not been approved, then, against our will, had to go to ‘phase two’ or ‘car names. “These were so bad that not let them registered.”

According

Blackley, were held four rounds with suggestions of names – most formed by acronyms. The executive notes that there was a name that seemed preferred Microsoft: 11-X or X-Eleven. In the end, the team decided to push for Xbox name, which ended up being kept – but not before generating new debate about the spelling of the word: X-Box, xBox, XboX and X-box were also bandied about.
