eCommerce in Portugal is not affected by the crisis, has ... - IOnline

Despite the current economic climate, the Portuguese-commerce sites were able to increase sales during the first quarter of 2013, and offer growth expectations for the rest of the year

There is at least one market segment that seems to bypass the current economic climate in Portugal – the electronic commerce. In other words, the Portuguese websites dedicated to the sale of products registered a significant increase in sales in 2013 compared to the same period last year, a trend that should continue to check throughout the year.

The first quarter of 2013 saw increasing sales by most Portuguese sites by 64%, according to the information put forward by the Quarterly Barometer ACEPI / Netsonda on electronic commerce in Portugal. A fifth of the websites have even recorded sales in excess of one million euros.

There were still 11% of Portuguese sites recorded a 100% growth in the number of customers, while 26% admitted had more than 10,000 customers during the first three months of the year. The Portuguese also seem to have adhered more to electronic purchases made through mobile devices, where there was 9% more sales than in the first three m onths of 2012.

“The results of this period point to three major trends we consider to be of utmost importance for our country, witnessing the enormous potential that e-commerce has: increasing the number of sites surveyed which sold abroad, increasing the percentage of sales made through mobile devices, and preferably by networks social platforms for communication and dissemination of brands and businesses, “according to Alexandre Nile Fonseca, president of ACEPI.
