Fishing Peniche, Nazaré postpone sardine fishing for 4 … – Daily News – Lisbon

The owners of the siege of Peniche and Nazaré decided today to suspend again the sardine fishery, now until May 4, to better manage the quota allocated, said the president of the cooperative OP Center.

At the end of an industry meeting in Peniche, Humberto Jorge told Lusa agency that the decision is related to “the tiny quota allocated” to the vessels of the siege of the ports of Peniche and Nazaré and that “it is disproportionate to the abundance of sardines found “since 01, when returned to the fishing of that species after a stop of six months.

The official said that, since that day, was captured a volume equivalent to 5% of fish allocated quota, when there until the end of May a limit four thousand tons of sardines at national level, about three tons per day per vessel.

“It’s problematic because, to continue thus exhausted the quota for May and lost the opportunity to, at that time, higher prices could, “said Humberto Jorge.

The sardine fishery was suspended mid-September to mid-May due to the capture ban for exhaustion of the quota and then the biological rest period.
