Portugal is European champion in robotic soccer simulation 3D - Público.pt

The victory is not new to the students and teachers who participated in the Portuguese league RoboCup German Open 2013 held at the end of last week, in Magdeburg, Germany. After five games, the final was contested between FC Portugal 3 D and German magmaOffenburg. Portugal won in large penalties.

A team of students and professors from the universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto won the European championship robotic simulated 3D. The project is to program a team of robots to play football in a simulated computer in three dimensions.

It was the tenth time that the team coordinated by researchers from three universities Portuguese won the simulated robotic soccer competition, having been three times the world champion and seven in Europe.

To win this competition you need to have “better research than other teams, innovate and develop new methods for robots and kicking him walk the ball and improve their intelligence,” said Luís Paulo Reis, Professor, Department of Information Systems, University of Minho Publico.

3D simulation league consists of two teams of 11 robots humanoids virtual playing football through a simulator. The machines are fully autonomous, with no human intervention during the game because they were previously scheduled.

code applied in robots is the same as virtual machines in real, but the schedule for the simulators is an advantage, assumes Luís Paulo Reis, because it allows to test multiple robots in the shortest time and improve techniques and movements without the wear robots real.

win these competitions demonstrate that allows the investigation by the Portuguese team is “quality equal to or higher than the U.S., Japan or Germany,” said Luís Paulo Reis. “It also gives greater visibility to the research we are doing,” not only in terms of robots to play football but in other areas such as dance or even in the rescue or rescue in the event of disasters.

Unlike championships played by players of the flesh, this case does not earn prize money but recognition. Therefore, the researcher welcomes made to promote the work done by the Portuguese.

Football is a sport this hard fought contest, with six different game types. Since robots real to virtual, this sport was chosen because it is “an area very attractive to investors and the general public,” said Luís Paulo Reis.

Since 2000, the European Championship is played in Germany or the Netherlands. In that year the Portuguese team debuted in victories when he won the 2D simulation mode. Now, prepare for the RoboCup World Championship, to be played in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, 26-30 June.
