“Flying saucer” NASA successfully tested – TeK.sapo

The vehicle was named Low Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) but its peculiar shape made it dubbed the flying saucer, since the engineers opted for a format similar to that populated the disk imagination of many science fiction fans in extraterrestrial visits to Earth.

An inflatable device is used to slow the vehicle that flew to close to 58 kilometers in altitude at a rate four times the speed of sound, simulating conditions to land on the red planet.

The test took place in Hawaii in June is now explained on video by an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

NASA will continue testing the technology and is already marked a new phase of experience for next year and that will be focused on the use of the parachute that has to be driven at a speed of 2500 miles per hour.
