Astronomers find new potentially habitable planet – EXAME.com

Sao Paulo – A new planet potentially habitable was discovered by astronomers . Dubbed Gliese 832 c, it is about 16 light-years away from Earth.

Astronomers use an index of similarity with our planet. The Gilese 832 c scored 0.81 (on a scale of 0 to 1) similarity. This index enter information such as temperature and density of the planet.

The mass of the planet is at least five times the mass of Earth . It takes 16 days to orbit the red dwarf star that acts as a hub for it.

The planet was detailed in an article published in the Astrophysical Journal . The group of astronomers was multinational, but led by Australian University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Using as a base the similarity index, he is third in the ranking of the most Earth-like planets. In a statement on the site UNSW, Professor Chris Tinney details the finding.

”Given the great mass of the planet, it is likely that he has a massive atmosphere, which can make the planet uninhabitable. A denser atmosphere would keep the heat trapped and would cause it was too hot for life, “he said.

The article on the planet, however, raises another possibility. “It is natural to ask whether the planet could have a giant satellite that might be habitable,” the scientists write. Find this satellite, unfortunately, is beyond the means of the researchers.

The planet ever found more Earth-like Gliese 667C is the c with a scale of 0.84. It is 23 light years from Earth.

Then is Kepler-62, with a similarity index of 0.83. He, however, is too far away, at 1,200 light-years away.

The discovery used telescopes located in Chile . The team of scientists gathers researchers from Australia, the UK, Finland, USA, Italy and Chile.
