"Selfie" voted word of the year for the Oxford dictionaries - TeK.sapo

The choice is justified by the fact that the word, which will have first appeared in 2002 in an online forum in Australia is increasingly widespread, and its use increased 17,000% in the last year.

The widespread use of the word in 2012 was aided by the publication in social networks and the pictures (selfies) of teenagers with Pope Francisco, for example, made viral.

Among the list words deemed eligible by the Oxford dictionaries has also been linked to technology “showrooming” examine a product in a store before buying it online at a lower price, and the term for digital currency “bitcoin”.
