Cinemas lose 5 million revenue - iOnline

The numbers of the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) released today, reveal a decrease of close to 5 million, on revenue of Portuguese cinema halls, and the loss of almost 200 000 spectators, since January.

From January to July 2013, according to data released, revenues from cinemas in Portugal totaled 34,662,037 euros, against 40,022,965 euros in the same period of 2012, reflecting a decrease of 13.4%.

As for spectators, in the first seven months of this year – January-July – there has been a decline of 194,569, or less than 10.8%.

Regarding national film debut, this year there was a premiere less than in the same period last year, according to data from the ICA.

Portugal debuted commercially-produced 17 films: nine feature films of fiction, five documentaries and three short fiction films.

film “Night Train to Lisbon” by Bille August, co-produced by German-Swiss-Portuguese was seen by 58,000 spectators and is, according to the ICA, “the most watched domestic film,” but not among the ten most seen between January and July this year by the Portuguese.

second in the top of the national production is occupied by “The neighborhood” by Jorge Cardoso, Lawrence Mello, José Manuel Fernandes and Ricardo Inácio, with 18,161 spectators, and in third place is “fourth division” of Joaquim Leitão, which was seen by 4,939.

total viewers of these three films, down from 100,000, does not approach the most watched film screens in national, who was “furious speed – 6″, Justin Lin, with a total 423,915 spectators.

Secondly the top of the most watched films between January and August is “The Hangover – part III”, Todd Phillips, for 274,819 spectators, and, thirdly, “The Croods” by Kirj Micco, which was seen by 264,204 viewers.
