Ubuntu 04.13 - Everything you need to know about the new version ... - Net & Tech

Ubuntu has made great strides forward in their latest versions. But the way it has traveled has not been free of criticism from its traditional users. Perhaps for this reason, Canonical took the 13:04 version to clean the house and focused more on improving Unity (Ubuntu interface). The result is a Ubuntu with a more enhanced navigation and faster.

Any version of Ubuntu, undoubtedly deserves the attention of the media. 13:04 And the version with the code name “Raring Ringtail” is not at all an exception. In general, the Ubuntu receives attention is deserved, since despite the introduction of Unity interface and all the advantages and disadvantages which presents an assumption remains true. To date we have not found any other distribution that will achieve a compromise between usability and functionality such as Ubuntu. And as you can see in the figure below is still very simple to run Ubuntu from a Live CD and within minutes we connect us to the internet.

Highlights of Ubuntu 04.13 "Raring Ringtail"

And speaking of the Popular Unity interface of Ubuntu was the main subject of attention from Canonical. The differences begin in the buttons present by default in Unity launcher (left sidebar). The buttons on the "Dash", "Desktop", "File Manager" "Ubuntu Software Center" and "Generator Workspaces" (Workspace Switcher) received new icons.

Still in Ubuntu launcher will notice a difference. Canonical decided to remove the default button "Workspace Switcher" for being little used by the Ubuntu community. But do not be discouraged, you can re-enable this option: System Settings> Appearance> Behavior .

still in the launcher can now take advantage of important features in navigating between open windows. For example, you can use the "quick lists" (quicklists), accessible via a click with the left button of the mouse over an icon in the launcher, to navigate between multiple windows open for the same application. For example if you have two windows open Firefox, you can use this feature to choose which window on which to work. If you prefer another way to navigate through these windows can use your mouse wheel to scroll and on the launcher icon corresponding to the application you want to change, to select the appropriate window. The selected window is now usefully marked by a small white circle next to the title.

can now interact with the Ubuntu One service and bluetooh through new indicators present on the panel (top bar) which in general are now more intuitive to use. For example you can now turn off and on easily sync the files you have on service cloud (Ubuntu One) from Canonical. May likewise connect and disconnect the bluetooth module of your notebook and make it visible.

Speaking on the top panel, there is another simple but useful feature that deserves mention. In earlier software productivity LibreOffice had no integration with the global menu panel Unity. This means that instead of the Menu of the LibreOffice applications appear on the panel (similar to what happens in Mac OS X), appeared in the window itself. This inconsistency in the Unity interface has been resolved and now LibreOffice by default behaves like any other application that is integrated with the global menu.

The ultimate highlight is that the reformulation of the management of user accounts online. Support for key services such as Facebook, Twitter, Jabber and Google remains. The big news here is that it can associate the various features of a service to individual applications, as well as enable or disable these features. The image that you present then setting up a Google account is a good illustrative example. For example you can integrate the photos you have on picasa in ubuntu dash (so that you can search), or choose to publish photos with Shotwell in Picasa. This means that by setting a single service as your account from Google with access in Ubuntu is a set of useful features that enrich the desktop integration with web services.

Improvements and bug fixes

Obviously there are other changes and bug fixes made by the Ubuntu team and are imperceptible to the human eye. However, there are significant improvements in performance. For example the opening of the "Dash" is now much faster, and fluidity is also evident in the introduction of search terms, and show the speed in terms of occurrence. The "Dash" is now also error tolerant search . For example if you type "gdit" will find occurrences of the search text editor usually termed as "gedit".

within the Dash can now also use the scroll bars "overlay" mode to navigate more easily from the top down to eg view all your applications. Previously the process had to be offset by scroll, or had to use the mouse wheel or slide your finger on the side of the touchpad, as if he wanted to move up / or down. Although it seems insignificant improvement improves productivity: if you have multiple applications installed this new feature allows you to scroll quickly through the list.

Apps and updates

couple of new features, improvements and fixes, you can find software updates that usually comes included. Ubuntu includes some of the best applications that existme the free software ecosystem. Among the included software you can find the following versions:

  • based on Linux Kernel version 3.8.8

But not only free software that Ubuntu offers. You can access a limited selection and quality of applications and video games in Ubuntu Software Center. But if you can not find games that your tastes do not despair. Do not you remember we announced that Steam has come to Linux? Well, besides being available for Linux, Ubuntu is the leading Linux distribution supported and you can use the Ubuntu Software Center to download Steam. There is curious to have to use a virtual store to unload another shop

Final Impressions

Since I started to try Ubuntu in its first versions until a few years ago when I adopted as my main system, much has happened in the Operating system market. Microsoft has undisputed leader of the possibility of becoming irrelevant in this market in the medium term. Moreover Ubuntu has evolved from a small community and refined to a statute operating system more friendly to the user after Windows 7 and Mac OS X.

There we stopped getting quite pleased with the noticeable performance improvements resulting from the correction of bugs and the attention that the community behind Ubuntu had to detail. The Raring Ringtail is always more polished version of Ubuntu and this detail alone is more than enough to keep the trophy for best Linux distribution available today. You can download the latest version we provide the links below.

Note 1: If you are unsure as to which version to choose (32 or 64 bits), check the specifications of your machine. If you have a computer with a minimum of 4GB of RAM we recommend that you install the 64-bit version. Otherwise the 32-bit version is always a good option.

Note 2: If you have recently purchased a PC with Windows 8, the more certain you have installed and activated the Secure Boot. Therefore look in the manuals of your laptop, or from the manufacturer the best way to disable Secure Boot. Disable this option will not put your computer at risk , the contrary may be the easiest option to install Ubuntu has in a system that in itself is quite safe Windows 8.
