“We found a significant negative relationship between the act of watching pornography for several hours a week and the volume of gray matter in the right lobe of the brain”, as well as the activity of the cortex prefrontal, write the scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.
“These effects could include changes in neuronal plasticity resulting from intense stimulation in the center of pleasure,” says the study, published in online edition of the journal “Psychiatry”, the American Medical Association.
The authors, however, could not prove that these phenomena are caused directly by the consumption of pornography and therefore claim it is necessary to continue research.
But, according to them, the study now provides a first indication of a relationship between the act of watching pornography and reducing the size and activity of the brain in response to sexual stimulation.
To conduct the research, the authors recruited 64 healthy men aged 21 to 45, which was asked to answer a questionnaire about the time devoted to watching pornographic videos. The result was an average of four hours per week.
Volunteers also underwent computed tomography (MRI) of the brain to measure the volume and watch how he reacted to pornographic images.In most cases, the more individuals saw pornography, more decreased the striatum of the brain, a small nerve structure well below the cerebral cortex.
Scientists have also observed that the higher the consumption of pornographic images, more deteriorated connections between the striatum and the prefrontal cortex, which is the outer layer of the brain responsible for behavior and decision making.
